IT web connection resilience - Convergence in disaster: When IT needs Telephony

The Majority of UK businesses power their PC’s or IT LANs with a single Broadband connection, normally of ADSL specification, and there can be few who have not suffered from downtime, ISP speak for “not working”.

The problem we have is that an organisation’s link to the outside world is becoming more dependent upon its Broadband connection. Larger businesses can employ expensive technology and diverse ‘phone line routing, thus providing protection against the organisation’s biggest threat – the “JCB”. For smaller business it’s not so easy or affordable.

Diverse routing to protect Site IT connectivity against the bulldozer is always going to be expensive yet the answer to ISP downtime is simple, have at least 2 ADSL’s and make sure they are from different providers.

It is now possible to strap or bond two or more ADSL lines together, It’s a bit like having your electricity supply from two companies, they both provide some yet if one goes you can still get by with just the one. The technology is new yet proven and in use in the UK.  You simply need a modem at the end of each ADSL and a load balance that links them to your IT services.

Linking the organisations IT lines to a portal that can also provide other Hot Spot access points allows any organisation to benefit from high levels of resilience and act as a low cost entry to Voice over the internet or VoIP.

The solutions are out there, it remains the duty of the BCM team to make sure sufficient “what if” questions have been both asked and answered.
